You’ve been wanting to start a blog or you’ve been blogging for a little while and want to get serious by taking your blog to the next level and turn it into a business. But there is this pesky little term you keep hearing about – “niche”.

Is it niche like “itch” or niche like “keesh”? Either way, it is something you’ll need to take seriously if you want to turn your blog into a money making machine!

So how the heck do you even go about finding your niche? It’s not as complicated as you think, but it will require you to get decisive. I will not allow you to get stuck in analysis paralysis mode!how-to-pick-a-profitable-blog-niche-pinterest-image

First, let’s define what a niche is.

Your blog’s niche is the CORE TOPIC for your blog. “But I have so many interests and want to blog about all of them!” you say? I get it, you are a multi-passionate individual. We ALL are!

Think of it like this – you find a headline of an article you want to read and click on it to go to the website. After reading the article you notice a couple of headlines on the sidebar, but they are a bunch of random articles on things unrelated to the original article you just read. So you quickly leave the website because these random topics aren’t relevant to you.

This is why you need to find a niche for your blog. It is the core topic that all of your content is created around. That way you gain new subscribers who don’t want to leave your website as soon as they lang on it!!

So how do you go about finding a niche/core topic for your blog? Follow the step-by-step guide I’ve laid out for you below.

Review the list. As you work through the steps below, start to weed through the list to see if any of the ideas speak to you.

Step 1: Start by Defining your Values, Beliefs, & Passions

Get your head out of the clouds! I’m not asking you to do the airy-fairy stuff you read about; the “self-help” or “self-discovery” that life coaches ask you do too. There is plenty of value in doing those exercises, but today we are going to cut right to the chase.

I want you to make definitive decisions about what you value, what you believe in and what you are passionate about. This isn’t so you can start working on yourself and becoming the person you always thought you should be. This is about who you are TODAY!

Discover your CORE Values, Beliefs & Passions

Here is a workbook that I put together to help you discover who you are at your core. It's only a few pages, nothing crazy!! 🙂

Your Core Values

Ok, so what do you value? What are your top 10 core values? Download the workbook above to take a little quiz to figure them out.

Your Core Beliefs

Now let’s determine what you believe in. This is your credo. What do you stand for. Think globally. What is something you believe in that people like to disagree with you on? Spend 10 minutes writing down every belief that comes to you. (Or use the workbook above to fill in these details.)

Here are examples of some of my beliefs:

  • I believe that we are meant to do more than work a 9-5 soul-sucking job
  • I believe that people are inherently moral and good.
  • I believe that by thinking positively and focusing on the positives that life turns out more positive.
  • I believe we each have a voice, a way of speaking and explaining things that certain people in this world are drawn to.

Your Core Passions

What are your passions? Now don’t laugh! (even though I did as I wrote that!) It’s the million-dollar question, right? Okay, let’s break it down. Take 10 minutes and answer these questions.

  • What did you enjoy doing as a child? Do you enjoy those things now?
  • What aspects of your current job do you enjoy most?
  • What do you enjoy researching and reading about?
  • What are you most curious about? What are you always studying? What courses in school did you enjoy most?
  • What would you enjoy doing if money was not an issue?
  • What are you doing when you are most happy? Where are you?

Once you’ve answered the above questions, you should be able to synthesise what it is that you LOVE to do. What it is that you are passionate about?

Here’s what I was able to synthesise from doing this exercise myself:

I am passionate about learning. I LOVE to figure out why people do the things they do, what makes them tick? I also LOVE researching and figuring out how things work. I’m constantly researching and analysing everything I don’t understand. Once I’ve figured things out, I like to share my new knowledge with everyone I know. I LOVE summarising it for them and helping them understand it. So my core passions are researching, learning and teaching.

By knowing what your core values, beliefs, and passions are, you will be able to hone in on a profitable niche. You will need to be passionate about your chosen niche in order to write on the topic for years to come. Look at the list of 200+ profitable blog niche ideas and circle the ones that you feel align with your core values, beliefs, and passions.

Then continue to step 2.

Step 2: What are you most knowledgeable in?

Now let’s explore what you are most knowledgeable in. Look back at the list of niche ideas that you circled because they aligned with who you are. Look at which of those ideas you know a lot about or want to become an expert in. Also think about what topic you can create the BEST content in the world for. Be thinking about products and services for those topics that you can create or source.

Put a star next to the ideas that you are most knowledgeable about.

Then continue to step 3.

Step 3: What are you interested in?

Now that you now what your core values, beliefs, and passions are and you know what you are most knowledgeable in; let’s think about what actually excites you!

Take a few more minutes to answer these questions:

  • What are your hobbies?
  • How do you spend your free time?
  • What are you constantly searching on the internet?
  • What are your favorite topics to talk about?

If you are knowledgeable and truly interested in the topic of your blog, then you will be able to create very high-quality content that thoroughly explains your ideas. Not to mention your enthusiasm for your topic will shine through your writing and get your audience fully engaged.

Out of those topics, which one would you enjoy spending the most time with. Will your skills and abilities apply to that industry?

Step 4: What are your Strengths?

It’s hard to do self-evaluation like figuring out what your strengths are. You are probably more aware of what your weaknesses! 😉

Think about what people compliment you for. Do people say you are a good writer? Editor? Do you take great pictures? Do you explain complex concepts well? Think back to the compliments you’ve received from friends, co-workers, and bosses over the last few years and write them down.

Knowing your strengths will help you determine how you will monetize your chosen niche and should help you begin to get an angle on which blog topic you can master and be the expert on.

Step 5: Brainstorm Post Ideas for your Niche

Okay, you’ve spent at least the last 45 minutes exploring the list of topics I’ve provided you. I want you to pick a topic that you will begin to explore a little further. Remember, we are being decisive today!

Once you’ve picked a niche/topic, I want you to brainstorm at least 50-200 blog post ideas for that niche. This should be easy if you’ve followed steps 1-4. If you struggle to come up with at least 50 blog post ideas, then you need to pick a different niche.

When you brainstorm blog post ideas, other ideas and angles will start to present themselves. You may realize that a certain segment of your niche isn’t being served in the market place yet. Or there is a gaping whole in the resources available for your niche. This is a good thing!

Step 6: Pick an Angle

Now that you know this is a viable niche for you, you need to pick an angle or in marketing speak – pick a position.

So for example, let’s say you have picked the niche – Social Media. That’s a very big topic. In order to be known as the expert in your niche, you’ll need to pick an angle. You could become the expert on Facebook. Or an expert on Pinterest. But being the expert on all Social Media is too much, especially in the beginning.

SOLVE A PROBLEM! What problems do you see out there that you can answer?

Step 7: Research the Potential Profitability

Can you buy products or services in your niche? Are there affiliate programs available? Visit other blogs in your niche and see what they are offering.

Is there an unanswered problem or need in this niche? Do you see a problem that people are having in this niche that you can provide a solution for?

Step 8: Nothing is forever

Don’t marry your niche. Don’t fall so in love with your niche that you paralyze yourself from making sound business decisions.

And lastly, your blog’s niche doesn’t have to be permanent. As you continue to blog, you’ll notice over time that you may start to expand into other “related” niches. And this is perfectly okay! This is another reason why I highly suggest people make their blog’s domain their personal name.

Now that you’ve determined your profitable blog niche, it’s time to find your target market! These are the people you will be writing for and providing solutions to. It’s important to know who they are, and what makes them buy.
